2009 Founders Day at NMS Labs

Today is Founders Day at NMS Labs – a day set aside to honor the memory of a man who truly lived the “American Dream.”

Our founder, Dr. Fredric Rieders was born in Vienna and immigrated by himself to the United States at the age of 16 after escaping the atrocities that faced Central Europe in the 1940s. After serving his new country during World War II, Dr. Rieders came back to the United States to complete his education. He embarked on a scientific career that spanned for more than five decades and led him to become a world-renowned forensic toxicologist.

Early on in his career when he worked as the City of Philadelphia’s Chief Toxicologist, Dr. Rieders researched such mysterious topics including
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Legionnaire’s Disease,
and heavy metal poisoning. During this time, he also taught at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Through the years, Dr. Rieders provided expert testimony in a variety of high profile cases including the Michael Swango case for which he received a Bronze Eagle from the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the Libby Zion case that led to legislation affecting hospital care, and the O.J. Simpson trial.

His love of science and teaching led Dr. Rieders to pursue a variety of philanthropic interests. Most notably, he established the non-profit Forensics Mentors Institute, a hands-on research and academic instruction organization to support scientific and humanitarian activities serving students of all ages but specifically the young and disadvantaged.

Dr. Rieders career took him to the private sector where he worked for a number of years and eventually started his own company, National Medical Services, now known as NMS Labs. Over the years, NMS Labs has been setting the standards for excellence in clinical toxicology and forensic testing – responding to the needs of healthcare providers, medical researchers, coroners, and the criminal justice system with well over 2,500 state-of-the-art tests.   Almost 40 years later, NMS Labs remains a family-owned and managed company that provides scientific results in the pursuit of truth.

We would like to invite you to share some of your great memories of Dr. Fredric Rieders as well.

One of my favorite memories was when we celebrated Dr. Rieders' 80th birthday. Client Services dressed up to represent various stages of his life, we all were so happy to celebrate with him. At the end of the the festivities,we all gathered around and he told us the story of how he became Dr. Rieders.
It was a great way to celebrate!

I worked for my dad for 12+ years, and gained so much! Something he taught me, that I'll always appreciate, is to keep asking questions. He kept reminding me that there are no stupid questions, no matter how ridiculous it sounds to you. And of course, his motto, "illegitimi non carborundum" is one of my favorite quotes.
Miss you, dad!

I did not have the honor of meeting Dr. Rieders; however, I have heard such wonderful things about his knowledge and how he could store 50 gazillion facts in his brain and recall them upon demand. That's probably one characteristic that made him so brilliant. I have also heard that he was also a scientist with his food and a few "surprises" showed up on people's desk or were missing from the fridge. I myself was surprised earlier in the year when watching a clip of Dr. Rieders at the OJ Simpson trial that he had an Austrian accent! And I hear there was a Dr. Rieders citing on the Tonight Show about his testimony...does anyone have a picture, a link? I wish I would have met him ... but in many ways, I think I have each time I take a few minutes to look around me here at NMS Labs...

I know Dr. Rieders as my 'Poppop'. I have a great memory from when I first started to really read newspapers (besides the comics!). I read an article about some big current issue (I can't remember now) and I couldn't wait to discuss it with my poppop, to see what he knew about it. To my surprise, I brought it up and not only was he familiar with it, he gave me so much more info on it that I would have never known! He always had great stories and jokes to tell; I'll forever cherish his great contributions to our family and to his legacy. I'm very proud to now work at the company he founded almost 40 years ago!

Dr Rieders was a man whose intelligence and knowledge placed him in an elite group of individuals. Yet he was so down to earth and easy to talk to. He had the ability to speak and relate to everyone, regardless of their level of experience or knowledge. His prescence in truly missed.

I have only worked at NMS Labs for a seemingly short stint and did not have the honor of meeting Dr. Rieders. However it is evident from working for this family the caliber of person Dr Fred Rieders was, not only to his family, but his colleagues and the world of science. Dr Rieders seemed to have no fear or limitations, his passion for science pushed the envelope. I admire, respect, and appreciate the legacy he has built. Science in Pursuit of Truth...such a power motto.

Dr. Fredric Rieders was a brilliant man, knowledgeable about so many things. He had obvious passion for science and enjoyed challenging others to be forward thinking. I was always appreciative of his keen ability to convey complex scientific matters in a very simple and understandable way. Colleagues, employees, students and many a jury have benefited from his gift. His intriguing stories and endearing personality are greatly missed. Happy Birthday Dr. Rieders.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
