Drug-related fatalities are now at the top of the accidental-death list in a growing number of states, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
And in the case of one of those drugs,
fentanyl, the growth of abuse and increase of deaths from the drug is alarming health officials and families. Fentanyl, an opiate, is much more potent than heroin and results in frequent overdoses that can lead to respiratory depression and death.
